Sheffield overview

Sheffield is a large urban area in South Yorkshire. The ‘Steel City' has a proud industrial tradition but in recent years has looked to broaden into other business sectors. The population has grown to around 530,000 and is quickly becoming much more ethnically diverse. Overall Sheffield is a relatively deprived area, although less so than elsewhere in South Yorkshire. Compared with other areas, more unemployed people are looking for work and earnings are lower for those in work. The health of people in Sheffield has generally improved and is now close to the England average. But there are large differences in people's life experiences of health, education, work and crime.

How is Sheffield doing?

This independent assessment by six inspectorates sets out how well local public services are tackling the major issues in Sheffield. It says how well they are delivering better results for local people and how likely these are to improve in future. If, and only if, our assessment shows that the following special circumstances are met in relation to a major issue, we use flags to highlight our judgements. We use a green flag to highlight where others can learn from outstanding achievements or improvements or an innovation that has very promising prospects of success. We use a red flag to highlight where we have significant concerns about results and future prospects that are not being tackled adequately. This means that local partners need to do something more or different to improve these prospects.

Sheffield has identified the following priorities for the area:
  • Strong Economy
  • Successful Neighbourhoods
  • Great Place to Grow Up
  • Inclusive Healthy Communities
  • Environmental Excellence
