Doncaster
Doncaster overview
Doncaster has an industrial history rooted in coal and transport. 291,100 people live in the large town of Doncaster itself and its neighbouring towns and villages, surrounded by wide areas of countryside. 3.5 per cent of the population are from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds, with some 4,000 gypsy and traveller residents and approximately 1,000 new migrants.
People are less well off than many other parts of the country, unemployment is higher and has been rising, and the health of the population is generally worse. This means greater pressure on public services. People living in Doncaster do not have equal chances of enjoying good health. Both men and women living in more prosperous areas are more likely to live longer than those living in poorer areas.
The industrial landscape is changing, after the decline of the coal industry and with the growth of modern communications. Doncaster is still redefining what its future should be. The challenge is for everyone in the borough to have a stake in that future.
'Discover the Spirit' is the area's local strategic partnership, responsible for making the Borough Strategy work, and for developing a better future for the area. Membership includes a wide range of representatives from the public, private, community and voluntary organisations.
